Meditation: Meaning, Origins, and Benefits

What Is Meditation?

The word meditation comes from the Latin meditatio, meaning "to think," "to contemplate," or "to reflect." In its earliest use, it described deep thought or spiritual reflection. Over time, meditation evolved across many traditions — from ancient Hindu and Buddhist practices in India (as early as 1500 BCE) to Taoist, Jewish, Christian, and Stoic contemplative disciplines.

Today, meditation is recognized worldwide as a practical method to focus the mind, cultivate awareness, and nurture inner peace.
